A parody of a literary work.
Henry Higgins enjoyed toying with Eliza Doolittle in Act 1 and 2 because she was so naïve and did not understand his clever remarks- since she was so oblivious, Henry found it amusing to watch Eliza bewildered by his sarcasm that she took by the literal sense of the word instead of the hint of joking behind it. Since Eliza has not been taught the ways of Henry in the beginning of the play, her reactions to him are much exaggerated.
