Pygmalion formed a woman in the fashion of what he seeks for in a woman, so he molded her according to his preferences. He was disgusted by living women and vowed not to be with any of them because he could not deal with their flaws. When he made his statue, he made her flawless and made her in a way he found most attractive. Henry Higgins formed Eliza in this way as well because Higgins was tired of regular women- he believed that they were too dramatic and came with too much baggage. He forms his female students in the manner he wishes all women to be and needs to be in order for society to accept them. Higgins himself does not know what he wants in a women because the very things that he said he didn’t like are the very qualities that encompasses Eliza and makes him start to find an interest in her. He molded Eliza into society’s expectation of perfection- not his expectation. Society is more of the sculptor, while Higgins is the chisel.
As Eliza's creator, Higgins's influence is over once his intentions are complete. An artist has control over the creation while it is being made, but once the creation is finished, it is its own form. Higgins controlled Eliza up to the point of when her training with him was over because she then possessed the knowledge needed in order to move on. She could not have her own independence while Higgins was teaching her because she still did not possess the Information needed for her to have her own mind. Higgins's creation was over when she won the bet, and with that came her independence. We can see where Higgins's influence begins to fade when Eliza throws the slippers at Higgins. For six months, Eliza was learning how to act and talk proper, but at that moment, his teachings are ignored and she acts out on her own will. There is a difference between acting improperly because you did not know any better and knowing that the action is improper and still doing it. The latter is worse, and Eliza knew that that behavior is not lady like. She is acting on her own bases, and not a slave to Higgins's manners.
The relationship between the artist and the art is symbiotic because both are using each other to fulfill their needs- the artist creates because he/she has a purpose while the creation wants to be created so that it can have its own form by the artist. Both serve each other, but once both of them serve its purpose, they are subject to parting.
